What is a thrust washer?

Thrust washers are flat washers that are located amid a rotating surface and a stationary component. They support the axial load or side to side motion on a shaft and stop movement along that shaft. The thrust washer gives a surface on which a bearing is supported. They are made to be used in high-wear applications.

They are used in high-wear applications such as axle assemblies, motors, transmissions, power take-offs, pumps and winches. Just about any application that needs a wear surface.

What materials are thrust washers manufactured from?

Thrust washer material is determined by the application. Choice of material is determined by numerous factors such as speed, load, and temperature. Thrust washers might be produced from plastic, brass, bronze, stainless steel, graphite, or various other materials. The common of thrust washers are made from low and high carbon steel. The carbon steel is maybe either case hardened or thru hardened.
